Last updated March 22, 2026

How to Send an SMS

  1. Navigate to Communications
  2. Click Compose
  3. Select SMS as the channel

Selecting Recipients

The recipient selector filters to contacts with valid phone numbers:

  • Search by name or phone number
  • Select individuals or groups
  • Contacts without a valid phone number are flagged and cannot be selected
  • A warning shows how many contacts were excluded due to missing phone numbers

Writing Your Message

  • SMS is text only — no templates, no HTML formatting
  • Keep messages concise and actionable
  • There’s no subject line for SMS

Sending

Click Send to queue your message. SMS messages are:

  • Sent via Twilio
  • Processed asynchronously
  • Delivery status tracked and shown in the communication log

Delivery Statuses

Status Meaning
Queued Waiting to be sent
Sent Handed off to carrier
Delivered Confirmed received by recipient’s phone
Failed Could not be delivered

Opt-Out

Recipients can reply STOP to opt out of future text messages. This is handled automatically and their opt-out status is synced back to Teams Elevated.

Tips

  • SMS is best for time-sensitive messages (cancellations, schedule changes)
  • Keep messages under 160 characters when possible for reliable delivery
  • Always check that recipients have valid phone numbers before selecting them
